Concord baseball team completes service projects

ATHENS — While many of its peers were either enjoying a week off or heading south for games, the Concord University baseball team spent a large portion of its spring break working on its 1,000 Hour Project by completing a pair of community service assignments throughout the surrounding area last week.

On March 10 the Mountain Lions donated their time to help clean up Johnston’s Chapel Softball Field, the site of Princeton’s Church Softball League. Among the upkeep performed by CU’s players and coaches included edging the infield, weeding the diamond and cleaning up the perimeter of the field.

Concord returned to work March 11 by completely redoing the little league field in Hinton.

“I am proud of our guys for the work they put in this week,” Concord head coach Andrew Wright said. “It’s easy to lose yourself in the midst of success and each of our guys showed a humble, selfless side with the work they did. It means a lot to our program to give back to our community.

“We have been preaching to them from the inception of the ‘1,000 Hour Project’ that there is more to life than baseball and that they have a chance to add value to other people’s lives. I would like to thank Johnston’s Chapel and the Hinton Community for providing us with the opportunity to give back.”

Started last season, The 1,000 Hour Project requires each CU baseball player and coach to pledge 25-30 hours of their time to community service projects that benefit Concord University and the surrounding community during the academic year.

The Mountain Lions were recognized for their efforts last year by earning the prestigious Total Community Involvement Award at the Athens-Concord Town Social.

On the field, Concord is currently in first place in the Mountain East Conference with an overall record of 13-5 and a league mark of 10-2. Concord is scheduled to play Mountain East Conference doubleheaders this Saturday and Sunday at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio.
