Georgetown survives against Bluefield

LEBANON, Tenn. — Oh so close.

The Bluefield College Rams took the defending NAIA national champion and No. 16 Georgetown Tigers down to the final seconds before dropping a 78-74 Mid-South Conference tournament quarterfinal decision on Thursday night.

Bluefield (15-12), which was making its first MSC tourney appearance after failing to qualify for the event last season, actually led by 12 in the first half, but the Tigers were able to survive in the final seconds to escape with the win.

A trio of seniors led the Rams. Alex Lubsey paced Bluefield with 19 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. Kearsten Marion added 17 points and four assists, while Josh Nesbit added 15 points and five boards.

Bluefield made its final Mid-South Conference appearance, with a return to the Appalachian Athletic Conference on tap for next season.

Monty Wilson led Georgetown with 31 points, including 14 for 17 at the free throw line. The Tigers were 26 for 35 at the charity stripe, while the Rams were 8 for 16.

Georgetown made six 3s, while Bluefield was just 2 for 12 from long range.

Russ Middleton added 14 points for Georgetown, while Jaylen Daniel had 11 and Noah Cottrill contributed 10. Deondre McWhorter pulled down 11 rebounds.

Georgetown (21-9) will play either Cumberlands, Ky. or Campbellsville in the semifinals on Saturday.

Bluefield will host the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Mid-East Regional next Thursday and Friday at the Dome Gymnasium. The other teams involved includes Union, Tennessee Temple and Hiwassee.
