Concord's Carnett headed for national track championships

ATHENS — Concord University's Shawnee Carnett has earned a berth into the 800-meter run at the 2014 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships to be held March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Carnett assured herself of a spot when she ran an 800-meter automatic qualifying time of 2:08.04, which was later converted to 2:09.52 due to track size, Feb. 7 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York.

In addition to being a school-record, her time at the Armory Invite was the quickest 800-meter time in the nation.

The 800-meter preliminary races will be held on March 14, with the championship race following day.

In four years at Concord, Carnett, has won an outdoor national title in the 800 meters, been named an All-American on four occasions, earned seven United States Track & Field and Cross Country all-region awards as well as breaking 12 Concord records.
