Concord men win fourth straight; Lady Lions lose to W.Va. State

ATHENS — The Concord University men’s basketball team won its fourth consecutive game by defeating West Virginia State 81-77 Monday night at the Carter Center.

Mike Boyd had 18 points, making 12 of 14 free throws, including clutch conversions down the stretch. He also dealt out eight assists, committed no turn-overs and grabbed five rebounds.

The inside-outside combination of forwards Damien Tun-stalle and Jordan Davis scored 16 points each. Tunstalle, who had seven rebounds, made 4-of-8 shots from three-point range while Davis went 6-for-9 from the field.

Freshman Cam Shannon sank a foul shot with two seconds left that ensured the win. He had 11 points and three steals for Concord (15-9, 11-9 WVIAC).

CU held advantages over West Virginia State (10-16, 7-13) in rebounds (38-33), steals (13-6), assists (18-12), turnovers forced (14-10) and second chance points (19-8).

Anton Hutchins had 17 points for West Virginia State.

Women’s game: W.Va. State 93, Concord 89

Concord turned the ball over just eight times and held a rebounding advantage of 42 to 37, but fell victim to the Yellow Jackets’ 53 percent success rate shooting from the field, and the visitors’ 25-for-35 effort at the free throw line.

Amanda Smith had 23 points, two blocks and two steals to lead Concord (7-19, 6-14). Four other Lady Lions scored in double figures, including Jacqueline Kestner’s double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Jasmine Blanton paced West Virginia State (12-13, 10-10) with 27 points and five assists, two blocks and two steals.

Concord plays at Glenville State on Thursday evening and closes out the regular season on Saturday by hosting Bluefield State.
