BC women stop St. Catharine

SPRINGFIELD, Ky. — Four Bluefield women scored in double figures as the Lady Rams defeated St. Catharine 71-68 on Thursday night.

Ashley White led Bluefield with 19 points, while Teqa McNeal added 17. Monique Robson tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Janee Simmons contributed 10 points and 10 boards.

Janae Howard paced St. Catharine (18-8, 10-7) with 23 points.

Bluefield (16-12, 8-9) visits Georgetown, Ky. today.

Charleston 87, BSC 70

CHARLESTON — Bluefield State erased a six-point deficit and took a 40-28 lead in the first half on Thursday at the University of Charleston, but the Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 17-6 run and stayed out of reach the rest of the game.

Shae Mebane led Bluefield State (12-10, 10-9 WVIAC) with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Polite had a career-high 12 points. Charity Harris provided six assists and two steals. Bluefield State finished with a 41-36 rebounding advantage.

For Charleston (13-10, 10-9 WVIAC), Jessi Cowden scored 44 points, the second-most points scored in a Division II women’s game this season. Overall, UC shot 56 percent from the floor and made 14 of 25 three-point tries.

The Lady Blues play today at 2 p.m. at Davis & Elkins and finish out their home schedule on Thursday, Feb. 21, taking on West Virginia State.


St. Catharine 89, Bluefield 86

It took overtime for Bluefeld to drop a three-point Mid-South Conference decision to Patriots.

Travis Wilkins scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds, while Arthur McMillan also contributed 21 points.

Byron Carpenter had a monster game for Bluefield with 35 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Pierre Walters added 18 points and 12 boards, while Kearsten Marion tallied 11 and Devin Page canned 10.

Bluefield (7-16, 3-14) will play today at Georgetown, Ky.

Charleston 92, BSC 63

CHARLESTON — In a game punctuated by 50 foul calls, the University of Charleston got double-figure scoring from four players to defeat visiting Bluefield State on Thursday evening.

Roy Cooper and Avery Holliday led the Big Blues (3-20, 3-16 WVIAC) with 13 and 11 points respectively. Cooper was 5 of 11 from the floor and made half of his six three-point tries. Sam Ouedraogo had seven of BSC’s 34 rebounds.

Evan Faulkner led UC (16-7, 12-7) with 24 points. The Golden Eagles shot 65.4 percent from the field in the first half to stake a 51-32 lead, then shot 36.4 percent from the field in the second half but went 15 for 19 at the foul line.

Bluefield State plays today at Davis & Elkins.
