Concord athletes receive honors

ATHENS — Concord University baseball players Ryan Johnston and Joey Miller were named to the 2013 Daktronics All-Atlantic Region second team Thursday.

Johnston, a sophomore third baseman and second team All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, has started 53 of 55 games played and is batting .407 with 67 runs, 10 home runs and 64 RBI. Johnston, who also leads CU in hits (77) and slugging percentage (.672), currently ranks third in NCAA Division II in runs scored and fifth in RBI.

Miller, a junior first baseman, has hit 14 home runs and driven in 69 runs while batting .339 with 16 doubles in his first season at Concord. Miller, who has played in and started 53 games for CU, has committed just one error this season while ranking second in NCAA Division II in RBI and seventh in home runs. Like Johnston, Miller also earned second team All-WVIAC accolades for his performance this year.

The duo helped lead Concord to its second WVIAC title in three seasons as well as a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Muscari Academic All-District

ATHENS — Concord University men's golf standout Evan Muscari has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District First Team.

Muscari, a junior business management major with a 3.83 grade point average, was Concord's top golfer in 2013. He competed in nine tournaments, earning two wins and seven top-five finishes while also leading CU to a conference championship. Muscari's average round score of 74.5 was a team-low.
