Concord wins five WVIAC track titles

GLENVILLE — Jeff Fertig and Robby Peters added conference titles to their growing list of career accomplishments to lead the Concord University men’s track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday.

Concord tallied 46 points for its fourth-place finish. Seton Hill claimed the team title with 213 points.

Fertig cleared a school-record distance of 2.10 meters to win the high jump. The mark was also an NCAA provisional qualifying distance. Fertig, the only athlete to clear two feet Saturday, currently ranks 10th in the nation in the event.

Peters, who won the 10,000-meter run on Friday, picked up his second championship of the weekend with a 5,000-meter run time of 15:17.37.

•Led by a dominating effort in the relay races, the Concord University women’s track and field team came on strong to win three titles and finish in fourth place at the WVIAC Conference Championship.

The team of Demi Kirk, Donnie Kirk, Casey Ord and Lydia Powell picked up conference championships in both the 4x100-meter and the 4x400-meter relay races with respective times of 48.36 seconds and 3:59.78.

Demi Kirk also won the conference title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.56 seconds, Kirk also led a trio of Mountain Lions in the top-five of the 100-meter dash with a second-place showing, and school-record time, of 12.42 seconds.

Donnie Kirk broke her own CU record in the 400-meter hurdles when she crossed the finish line in a time of 64.12 seconds. .Powell added another second-place finish to the Concord point total with a time of 59.10 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

In field events, Maya Ihejirika broke the Concord record in the triple jump after turning in a mark of 10.75 meters.
