WVU debut with Gold and Blue

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia coach Bob Huggins introduced the 2013-14 men’s basketball team at the Gold and Blue Debut.

The 30-minute intrasquad scrimmage Friday night was more about an array of dunking displays and 3-point attempts than defense.

Coming off a losing record last season, Huggins told the crowd of about 5,000 he’s confident his players will represent the state well this season.

Basketball great Rod “Hot Rod” Hundley was introduced to a standing ovation before the scrimmage, along with the team, which has just six players back from last year’s roster — and is without some current ones, too.

WVU said forward Remi Dibo underwent knee surgery earlier in the day. He was on crutches and is expected to miss up to three weeks.

Forward Elijah Macon, who has been bothered by a wrist injury, didn’t participate in the scrimmage, but junior college transfer Jonathan Holton did. Holton is eligible to practice and scrimmage, but not compete against other teams, as questions about his academic status remain unresolved.

West Virginia began practicing a few weeks ago, but Friday was the first chance for fans to see the team.

The Blue team defeated the Gold 41-32 as Huggins watched most of the scrimmage from the first row behind the scorer’s table while his assistants coached the two sides.

Following player introductions, Eron Harris, Terry Henderson and Tyrone Hughes participated in slam-dunk contest.  Henderson, WVU’s fourth-leading scorer from a season ago, was eventually crowned the winner after a two-handed windmill, a reverse throw down and a dunk where he jumped over point guard Gary Browne.

After the on-court activities ended, fans lined up to get player autographs.

West Virginia opens the regular season at home Nov. 8 against Mount St. Mary’s.
