Local college hoops: Bluefield stings Wasps

EMORY, Va — Bluefield College improved to 3-2 on the season in men’s basketball, hammering Emory & Henry 99-70 on Tuesday night.

Eastern Illinois transfer Alex Lubsey led Bluefield with 27 points, while Kearsten Marion added 20, and also dished out seven assists.

Emory & Henry (2-3), which fell behind 53-39 at halftime, was paced by Malcolm Green with 12 points and 11 by Chavis Hamilton.

Devin Page had eight points for the Rams, and led both teams with nine rebounds. Josh Nesbit and Ederson Exume had eight points each.

Bluefield will participate in a tournament at Virginia State on Friday.



UNC-Asheville 75, Bluefield 71

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — It was just an exhibition, at least for the Lady Rams, but they made the Bulldogs earned a four-point win over Bluefield.

Teqa McNeal led Bluefield with 19 points, while Janee Simmons had 17 points and eight rebounds. Whitney Smith tossed in 13 points, while Maryah Mazyck added 10 points and 11 boards.

North Carolina-Asheville was paced by Ja’Da Brayboy with 21 points. Paige Love canned 13 and Brittany Gwynn added 11.

Bluefield travels to Notre Dame College on Sunday.



Chowan 87, Bluefield State 81

MURFREESBORO, N.C. — The Bluefield State women’s basketball team dropped to 0-5 on the season, falling at Chowan.

Rachel Gostomski paced the Hawks with 22 points, including five 3s. Janelle Murphy tossed in 17.

Chowen (5-2) jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the game.

Kearah Jefferys led Bluefield State with 32 points. Andrea Hauser added 13 points, while Jenaya Abernathy tossed in 10. Tonya Jackson paced the Lady Blues with 10 rebounds.

Bluefield State (0-5) will host Kentucky State on Sunday.
