Virginia women rally from eight down to beat Hokies

Marshall women fall to SMU

BLACKSBURG, Va. — With a one-point lead, Virginia’s China Crosby stole the basketball from Virginia Tech in the final seconds on Sunday and scored a fast-break layup to give the Cavaliers a 50-47 win. A three-point try by the Hokies’ Monet Tellier bounced off the front of the rim at the buzzer.

Virginia (15-8, 7-5) erased an eight-point second-half deficit to snap a two-game losing streak and to beat the Hokies for the 14th straight time.

Virginia Tech (8-15, 2-10) made six of its first eight three-point attempts and went into the half with a 30-24 lead.

The Cavaliers took a 46-45 lead on a jumper by Ataira Franklin with 2:59 remaining in the game.

Franklin and Telia McCall each scored 12 points for Virginia. McCall also had eight rebounds and an assist. Crosby scored five points with five assists and four rebounds.

Lauren Evans led Tech with 13 points.

SMU 67, Marshall 50

DALLAS, Texas — Marshall’s women shot 19 of 64 from the field and made half of their 16 foul shots as SMU won its 10th straight game and kept its Conference USA record perfect.

The Thundering Herd (7-15, 1-8 C-USA) closed to within two points, 33-31, by starting the second half with an 8-to-2 run. The Mustangs (18-4, 9-0) then went on a 27-to-5 tear on their home floor, taking a 60-36 advantage with 5:30 left.

Marshall’s Suporia Dickens had her first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.

SMU was led by Keena Mays, who had a game-high 17 points plus five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Marshall out-rebounded the Mustangs 46-41 and totaled 22 offensive rebounds, but could turn those caroms into only 15 second-chance points.
