Local stars shine at college level

BLUEFIELD — Richlands product Austin Fuller (18) played a key role in Southern Methodist’s 43-10 rout of Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve. Fuller, who led the Blue Tornado to the 2006 Division 3 state championship, caught four passes for 84 yards for the Mustangs. Fuller, who played at Virginia Tech for three seasons before transferring to SMU, completed his college career with this performance.

Former Bluefield Beavers’ standout Craig Ponder is averaging 7.9 points in 25.1 minutes of action per game for North Carolina-Wilmington. Ponder, who has started in eight of 11 games for the 5-6 Seahawks, is also contributing 2.5 rebounds a contest. He had 19 points in the Seahawks’ last outing, an 87-73 win over North Carolina-Greensboro. UNCW will travel to Campbell on Saturday.

 Princeton’s Tesla Akers, a senior at Ferrum, has led the Panthers to a 6-0 record, scoring 13.8 points and grabbing 2.3 rebounds a contest. She has connected on 51.7 percent (31-60) from the field, 50 percent (14-28) from 3-point range and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the free throw line. Ferrum has won six games by an average of 24.8 points a game, with a tournament slated for this weekend in Huntingdon, Ala.
