Wesleyan stops CU in MEC tourney

SALEM, Va. — Top-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan scored five runs in the top of the first inning on its way to a 10-6 Mountain East Conference softball tournament win over Concord on Thursday evening at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Concord (30-22) which defeated Glenville State 8-7 earlier in the day, will play Shepherd in an elimination game today at noon.

West Virginia Wesleyan (39-10) collected 10 hits off three Concord pitchers, led by three hits and three runs scored from Alex Furr. Olivia Gore added two hits, scored two runs and drove in two, while Megan Malenstyn added three RBIs.

Jacqui Omichinski and Kristina Nelson combined to scatter nine hits.

Concord was paced by Kristen Rose with two hits and two runs scored, while Allie Reid drove in two runs. Reid also took the loss in the circle.

Concord won its opener in the first game of the inaugural Mountain East tourney over the Pioneers. .

Alyssa Morris led Concord’s 12-hit attack with three hits, while Lauren Lewis and Brantlea Wood had two hits and drove in two runs apiece. Sarah Herndon picked up the win in the circle, with Reid collecting the save.

Concord scored five runs in the fourth to build a 8-4 lead.

Glenville State (17-26) hit three home runs, and rallied for three runs over the final two innings, but came up a run short. Morgan Scarpellini led the Pioneers with two hits, including a homer, and two runs batted in.

Concord, which is currently 10th in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, and must finish in the top eight to qualify for postseason play.
