BC Rams outslug Crusaders in doubleheader sweep

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The Bluefield College Rams have retooled their bats into a higher gear. The Rams scored in double digits for the third and fourth times in a row on Monday, taking wins of 16-1 and 18-9 from Tennessee Temple at Bowen Field.

Bluefield (29-12, 10-10 Mid-South Conference) banged out 13 hits and scored two or more runs in each stanza to take a five-inning decision in game one.

Kaleb Houchins went the distance on the mound and allowed just five hits, four of them singles, to improve to 5-0 for the Rams. He retired the last four batters he faced.

Zac Russell-Myers and Jakob Schober both drove in four runs. Daniel Copeland was 2 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Jan Ramirez took the loss on the mound, giving up 15 earned runs, 13 hits and six walks.

Game two began with Bluefield taking a 5-0 lead in the first, starting with a leadoff homer by Russell-Myers. Doubles by Sawyer McLamb, Copeland and Kahlin Villines added to the scoring explosion.

The Crusaders scrambled back to take a brief 9-8 lead in the top of the fifth, gaining the advantage on a two-out, two-RBI single by Jake Stone.

The visitors did not score again, as the Rams put up the final 10 runs. Chris McCollister and Villines led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles to craft a tie, and Russell-Myers smacked his second homer of the game to take the lead back.

Rams reliever Cory Niten picked up the pitching victory, tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball after William Kane and Dylan Cole each gave up four earned runs from the mound.

Giles Hunter absorbed the loss. In one inning, he gave up seven hits, two walks and six earned runs.

Bluefield out-hit the Crusaders 18 to 11 in the second game.

The Rams have won seven of their last eight games including Sunday’s 14-4 and 12-4 victories in Ohio against Shawnee State University.

Bluefield is scheduled to host Virginia Intermont at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bowen Field.
