College roundup: Concord splits with Charleston, Watson sets Concord record

CHARLESTON — Concord split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader on Saturday, dropping the opener 5-3 and coming back to win 3-0.

Ryan Johnston led Concord, going 3-for-6 with one run scored. Joey Miller added a pair of doubles while Bret Blevins and Jerrod Groves also registered two hits each with both players adding an RBI and a stolen base as well.

Tyler Coyle earned the second game win on the mound.

Concord (19-11, 16-8) will play two more today with Charleston at 1 p.m.

Rio Grande 12, Bluefield 0

BLUEFIELD — Bluefield College’s bats were as cold as the temperatures, as the Rams were held to one run in a Mid-South Conference loss to Rio Grande at Bowen Field.

David Steels allowed just one hit, while striking out four and walking none for the RedStorm (16-20, 4-12) Marcus Makuch led Rio Grande with five RBIs.

Tyler Timmer had the lone hit for Bluefield. Zac Russell-Myers was saddled with the loss on the mound.

Bluefield (22-11, 6-9) will host Rio Grande in a doubleheader today at noon.

Virginia State 4, Bluefield State 1

PETERSBURG, Va. — Bluefield State dropped to 8-16 on the season, dropping a decision at Virginia State (20-15).

Bluefield State will try to snap an eight-game losing streak today during a doubleheader with the Trojans at 1 p.m.

TCU 8, 3

West Virginia 0, 1

FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU starter Preston Morrison had a no-hitter entering the seventh inning en route to an 8-0 shutout victory over the Mountaineers.

Morrison (3-3) allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts and one walk in the complete game effort. He retired 17 straight West Virginia batters from the first to the seventh inning.

Bobby Boyd had West Virginia’s lone hit, a double in the seventh.

TCU made it a sweep with a 3-1 win in the nightcap. Michael Constantini and Max Nogay had two hits each in the loss.

West Virginia (16-11, 2-3), which travels on Tuesday to Penn State, did complete  a triple play in the third.
