Expectations high for Herd; WVU picked 8th

BLUEFIELD —  Marshall has been picked to finish second in the East Division in the Conference USA Football Preseason Poll. The Thundering Herd garnered 82 points and two first-place votes, second only to East Carolina’s 95 points and 11 first-place picks. Tulsa was the runaway winner in the West, taking all 14 first-place votes, and 98 points, followed by Rice...List, B-3.

In other Marshall news, Thundering Herd quarterback Rakeem Cato, who has been selected to the Davey O’Brien Award Watch List — which goes to the nation’s top quarterback — is also the C-USA’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Other Marshall players on the C-USA first team are Tommy Shuler, tight end Gator Hoskins and punter Tyler Williams.

West Virginia has plenty of bulletin board material. One day after the Mountaineers didn’t have a single player chosen for the All-Big 12 preseason football team, West Virginia was picked to finish eighth in the 10-team Big 12 Football Preseason Poll. West Virginia, which finished with a disappointing 7-6 record last season, is ahead of just Iowa State and Kansas State. Oklahoma State is the favorite to win a second straight Big 12 title...List, B-3.
