VT's Journell on Groza Award watch list

BLACKSBURG, Va. —  Virginia Tech senior and Giles High School product Cody Journell, pictured, has been chosen to the Lou Groza Award Watch List, which is presented to the nation’s top place-kicker at the end of the college football season.

Journell was 20 of 25 in field goal attempts for the Hokies last year, including game-winning field goals in three-point wins over Georgia Tech, Virginia and Rutgers.

Other regional athletes on college football watch lists:

Maxwell Award (Player of Year): Rakeem Cato, Marshall; Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech.

Bronko Nagurski Award (Most outstanding defensive player): Antone Exum, Virginia Tech; Jack Tyler, Virginia Tech

Chuck Bednarik Award (Defensive player of year): James Gayle, Virginia Tech.

Outland Trophy Award (Top interior lineman): Andrew Miller, Virginia Tech; Morgan Moses, Virginia

Jim Thorpe (Best defensive back): Antone Exum, Virginia Tech

John Mackey Award (Top tight end): Jake McGee, Virginia; Gator Hoskins, Marshall

Lombardi Award (Top lineman): Morgan Moses, Virginia; Jack Tyler, Virginia Tech.

Ray Guy Award (Top punter): Tyler Williams, Marshall

Four more major lists are still to be released: Fred Biletnikoff Award (Top WR, July 16); Davey O’Brien Award (Top QB, July 17); Doak Walker Award (Top RB, July 18); Walter Camp Award (Most outstanding player, July 19).
