An efficient first half from the field and solid rebounding throughout carried the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers to an 84-54 win over Bluefield State in the WVIAC tournament first round Tuesday night, ending the Big Blues’ season.
Roy Cooper led the Big Blues (4-23) with 15 points in his career finale while junior Treon Claiborne added 10 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
BSC never led in the game as Alderson-Broaddus (19-8) jumped out to an early 12-2 lead and built a 44-18 halftime advantage. In the first half, the Big Blues shot 20 percent (5-for-25) from the floor while the Battlers shot 51.6 percent (16-of-31).
In the second half BSC’s defense limited AB to only 34.5 percent (10-of-29) shooting from the floor, but the Battlers went 14-for-19 from the free throw line.
The Big Blues finished the game with a season-worst 25.8 field goal percentage.
Kuklin Bohanon and Adam Kline led the Battlers with 14 points apiece. A-B won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding BSC 50-41.
