EAST RIVER —
Bluefield College wrapped up homecoming weekend on a positive note Sunday, with the men’s and women’s soccer teams taking wins from conference foe St. Catharine College at East River Soccer Complex on Senior Day.
BC senior James Gunn fired in the winner in overtime from the left corner of the box to give the men a 3-2 victory.
After a scoreless first half, the Rams (8-6, 3-3 MSC) took a 2-0 lead on goals by Adam Hern, assisted by Gunn, and by Michael Callaghan on a penalty kick. The Patriots (2-11, 0-6) used headers by Jakob Riekert and Sawyer Abshire to tie the match — the final goal coming in the last 30 seconds of regulation.
BC goalkeeper Jefferson Watson, also a senior, made seven saves, and C.J. Powell saved 10 shots for the Patriots.
The Bluefield College women got goals less than two minutes apart for a 2-0 result, their first Mid-South Conference win of the season.
With 10 minutes gone in the match, Missy Baines drove the ball into the net off a corner kick. Ashley Moreno took an assist from Pip Pattison for the insurance score.
Kayla Richardson made a dozen saves in goal for BC (6-5-1, 1-4-1 MSC). The Patriots’ Lindsey Vinson had three saves. Bluefield was called for 14 fouls and St. Catharine (9-4, 3-3) was whistled for 10 fouls and three yellow cards. BC was assessed one yellow card.
Richardson, Pattison and both scorers are Bluefield College seniors.
