Virginia beats Army 2-1 in pitchers’ duel

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Brandon Waddell and Kyle Crockett combined on a five-hitter and Virginia opened the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 victory against Army.

Waddell (6-2) allowed three hits and a run in seven innings while striking out eight. Crockett finished for his 11th save, striking out the side in the ninth.

The Cavaliers trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth when Kelly Towns doubled and Nate Irving singled.

Mike Papi tied it with a single to right-center, and Joe McCarthy followed a walk with one of his three hits to put the Cavaliers ahead against Black Knights’ ace Chris Rowley (9-4).

Rowley has lost just five games over the last two seasons, two against Virginia in the NCAA tournament.

The Black Knights’ run came in the fifth when Jacob Page singled, took third on a sacrifice and single by Michael Sands and scored on Grant Van Orden’s squeeze bunt.
