On the college diamonds: Concord, Rams sweep twinbills

ATHENS — Senior starters Ryan Weatherholtz and Tyler Coyle, along with the relief efforts of  Tim Leather (2-0), led Concord to a pair of wins over Farimont State, 4-0 and 5-4 in nine innings.

Concord (5-3, 2-0) will host the Falcons in a twinbill today at 11 a.m.

Weatherholtz (2-0) threw a complete game shutout in the opener, and Coyle struck out eight in sevem innings, with Leather working the last two frames for the Lions,

Joey Miller, the reigning NCWA Hitter of the Week, led Concord at the plate with four hits, including a double, and three runs batted in.

Bluefield extends streak to 11

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Bluefield College made it 11 wins in a row with  4-2 and 6-0 Mid-South Conference wins over Cumberlands, Ky.

Kenneth Miranda and Cory Niten combined on an eight-hitter, and Tyler Lundgren and Daniel Copeland drove in runs in the opener for the Rams.

In the nightcap, the Rams (11-2, 3-0) were pace by Ryan Shockey with a seven-ining six-hit masterpiece, striking out six and walking none. Copeland had three hits and two RBIs, while Tyler Timmer added a pair of hits.

Bluefield has its longest win streak since 2010 when the Rams won 12 straight games.

Virginia Tech 4, UMass-Lowell 3

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Alex Perez drove home Kyle Wernicki with a bases-loaded single in the 11th inning, as the Hokies improved to 5-2 on the season.

Tanner McIntyre, who tossed 5 2/3 innings of relief, picked up the win on the mound. Perez, Wernicks and Brendon Hayden had two hits each for Virginia Tech.

West Virginia 6, Coastal Carolina 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Jacob Rice collected three hits and Sean Carley worked seven innings to pick up the win for the Mountaineers in the Caravelle Resort Tournament.

West Virginia (4-4) received two hits each from Taylor Munden, Bobby Boyd and Billy Fleming.

College Softball

Rams, Blues lose 2  

Bluefield College dropped to 0-6 on the season, dropping a doubleheader at Campbellsville 8-6 and 12-9. Bluefield State fell to 0-9 with a doubleheader loss to Malone College, losing 19-0 and 11-3 at Graham Recreation Park.
