Concord wins fourth straight

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — Ben Nester ran for three touchdowns, Calvinaugh Jones generated 104 rushing yards, and Andy Ellington kicked a school-record 52-yard field goal as Concord University defeated Notre Dame College 30-14 on Saturday in the suburbs of Cleveland.

Concord (8-2, 7-1 Mountain East) held Notre Dame (4-6, 3-5) to six three-and-out possessions in picking up its fourth straight win. Pedro Powell, who came into the game as the conference’s leading rusher, gained 40 yards on 19 attempts for the Falcons.

Davon Marion picked off his fifth interception of the year early in the fourth quarter and returned it 34 yards. Mike Carey also had a pickoff for Concord.

Keith Ferguson and Will Greathouse added sacks for the Concord defense, which had 11 tackles for loss. Linebackers Jake Lilly and Austin Dotson each had 10 tackles for CU.

Brian Novak completed seven of 15 passes for 96 yards for the Mountain Lions. Falcons quarterback Ray Russ was 23 for 35 for 175 yards.

Sam Wright put Concord ahead with a 12-yard touchdown run less than five minutes into the contest, and the visitors led 14-6 at halftime after Nester’s 3-yard scoring run.

The Falcons tied the game 14-14 in the third quarter on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Russ to Colton Wallace and a two-point conversion. The Mountain Lions then went 92 yards in 12 plays to take the lead for good on Nester’s second score of the day, from one yard out.

Ellington’s field goal, which bettered his own school record by four yards, came midway through the fourth quarter after a nine-play drive. Nester tacked on another 1-yard touchdown run with eight seconds left in the game.

The Falcons’ 14 points was their lowest total of the season. Concord held a time-of-possession advantage of almost 10 minutes in the game.

Concord concludes its regular season next Saturday in Athens, playing undefeated Shepherd University at 1 p.m. A win would give Concord a share of the conference championship and likely carry with it a postseason berth.
