Marshall falls on final play against Raiders

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Logan Kilgore connected with Tavarres Jackson on a 9-yard scoring pass on the final play of the game, leading Middle Tennessee State to a 51-49 Conference USA win over Marshall on Thursday night.

Essray Taliaferro scored on a 2-yard run with 2:29 left in the game to enable the  Herd to overcome a 10-point fourth quarter deficit, but Kilgore drove the Blue Raiders down the field and connected with Jackson with no time left on the clock.

Kilgore threw for 277 yards and four touchdowns, including seven receptions for 91 yards to Jefferson. Jordan Parker gained 127 yards and Reggie Whatley added 104 for the Blue Raiders (4-4, 2-2).

Rakeem Cato was 19-of-35 for 235 yards and three scores, while Taliaferro ran for 134 yards and two scores. Kevin Grooms also scored twice for Marshall. Gator Hoskins, Jazz King and Tommy Shuler also had touchdown receptions in the loss.

 The teams were tied at 21-21 at the break, with the Blue Raiders taking a 38-35 lead into the final period, and building a 45-35 lead with 13:17 left in the game.

Grooms and Taliaferro followed with touchdowns to put the Herd ahead before the late score by the Blue Raiders.

Marshall (4-3, 2-1) will host Southern Mississippi on Nov. 2.
