College roundup: Concord tops UVa-Wise on the tennis court

WISE, Va. — The Concord University men's tennis team swept doubles and won four of six singles bouts on Tuesday afternoon in conference action at UVa-Wise, taking a 7-2 victory.

In singles, Concord’s Danny Fonrondona defeated Marc Huff 6-3, 6-0 while Henry Boyle bested Chris Armistead 6-3, 6-0. Bill Wright beat Oleg Kopy-chenko 6-2, 6-3 and Daniel Contente outlasted Juhan Washington 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Concord’s doubles winners were Boyle and Robert Caplin, Stanis Cohen and Fonrondona, and Wright and Contente.

Concord is now 2-1 in the fall season.

Women’s Soccer

Charleston 2, Concord 1

ATHENS — Charleston scored a pair of second half goals to defeat the Concord women’s soccer team 2-1 on Tuesday at Anderson Field.

Abby Barber put Concord up 1-0 in the first half, but the Lady Lions did not score again.

Charleston tied the score on a goal by Kimberly D’Angelo in the 84th minute, and Lydia Murray added the game-winner four minutes later.

Kristen Twoney had five saves in goal for Concord. The Lady Lions had six shots on goal in the game.

Concord (3-5-1, 1-4-1) will visit Notre Dame (Ohio) on Oct. 5.

Men’s Soccer

Charleston 2, Concord 0

ATHENS — Charleston kept Concord from earning its first Mountain East win.

Kody Harrell scored 11 minutes in for the 1-0 lead for Charleston, and Connor Branson added a second goal after the break.

Ryan Forde led Concord with three shots in the game. The Mountain Lions have lost four games in a row.

Mitchell Thompson had seven saves for Concord (2-6-1, 0-4-1), which will visit Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday.

Wright to speak at WVBCA Clinic

ATHENS — Concord University baseball head coach Andrew Wright will be one of five featured speakers at the West Virginia Baseball Coaches Association Clinic on Jan. 31, 2014 in Charleston.

Wright will address hitting topics as well as Concord's offensive approach.

Concord won the WVIAC championship last season, finishing the season with a school record 36 wins.
