WVU women squeak by Boston; Marshall falls to ISU

BOSTON — Ayana Dunning had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots as No. 14 West Virginia held off Boston University 60-57 Monday night.

The Mountaineers (2-0) led by seven with 3:51 to go, but Chantell Alford, who scored a career-high 30 points with nine rebounds for the Terriers, tied it at 57 with 29 seconds remaining.

Dunning hit 1 of 2 free throws with 4 seconds left, then knocked down a pair of foul shots 2 seconds later.

Alford, who had already made six 3-pointers, missed from half court with 2 seconds left.

During a back-and-forth first half, Boston University (1-1) used a 13-4 run in the final 2:59 to lead 33-28 at the break, then increased its lead to eight with 12:32 to go

But the Terriers scored only two points in the next 5:53, with the Mountaineers regaining the lead at 48-47 on a Bria Holmes 3.


Indiana St. 55, Marshall 49

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — In its first road contest of the year, Marshall women's basketball fell to Indiana State, 55-49, Monday night inside the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

With the loss, the Thundering Herd falls to 1-1 on the year while Indiana State goes to 2-0 on the young season.

Marshall was led by Chukwuka Ezeigbo, who in her first career start, posted team-highs in points (12), rebounds (8) and blocked shots (7).

Her rebound and block totals were both career highs, while the blocks tie for fifth most by a Herd player in a game.

ISU jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Herd answered with a 10-4 run to slim the game to one, 16-15. Marshall only scored one bucket in the final six-plus minutes of the first half. That led to a 33-23 lead for the Sycamores at halftime.

The Sycamores were led by Racheal Mann with a game- high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Anna Munn added 14 points.

The Herd outshot the Sycamores in the game, shooting 41.3 percent for the contest thanks in part to a 50 percent effort after half time. ISU shot 41.3 percent in the game. Marshall had 19 points off the bench; Indiana State had nine.
