College roundup: Lady Rams improve to 2-0

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Teqa McNeal led three Lady Rams in double figures with 13 points. Tempestt Lewis tallied 11 and Monique Robson added 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Bluefield to an 84-48 win over Allen University (S.C.) on Saturday night at the Dome Gymnasium. .

Bluefield (2-0) connected on 63 percent of its shot attempts in the opening half and 58.6 for the game. Celinda Arrington and Alexis Allen each had two 3-point baskets apiece.

Amanda Parks paced Allen, S.C. with 12 points and eight boards.

Bluefield will host crosstown rival Bluefield State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

College Men

Virginia U. of Lynchburg 80, Bluefield 74

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Despite 25 points by Kearsten Marion and 24 points from Byron Carpenter, the Bluefield Rams dropped its season opener at the Dome Gymnasium.

Virginia University of Lynchburg (2-2) received 33 points from Christopher Calvan and 20 points and 10 boards by Egor Shakhmetov.

Carpenter also had 13 rebounds for Bluefield. Andrew Wilson added 11 points and four assists.

The other six players that saw action for the Rams combined for just 14 points.

Bluefield will host Bluefield State on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Cross County

Concord competes in regionals

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Senior Robby Peters finished in 17th place to lead the Concord men’s cross country team at the 2012 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships Saturday in Lock Haven, Pa.

Edinboro University won the race while host Lock Haven and East Stroudsburg tied for second place. All three teams qualified for the Division II National Championships. Lock Haven’s Alex Monroe won the race with a top time of 30:41.1.

Peters capped off his outstanding season with a time of 31:58.1. For the year, Peters won five races including the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship race.

The senior duo of Nick Lucento and Sterling Snyder were Concord’s second and third finishers Saturday. Lucento finished the course in 34:00.1 to place 83rd and Snyder came in 95th with a time of 34:32.4.

The Concord ended its season with a 19th-place finish, led by senior Chelsea Callaway, who placed 69th in the 171-woman field with a time of 23:08.2. Senior teammate Rachel Williams finished the race in a time of 23:56.3, placing 95th overall.

Shippensburg won the event followed by Edinboro in second place and Indiana (Pa.) in third place.
