GREENSBORO, N.C. —
The Bluefield State baseball team opened its 2013 campaign with an 11-4 loss to Guilford College (N.C.) Saturday afternoon at Edgar McBane Field.
The Quakers (2-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the fourth inning but the Big Blues (0-1) scored three times in the sixth.
Tanner Lilly singled through the left side followed by a single to right field from Sean Williams. Dale Davis doubled to left to score both. Rusty Rainey blasted a RBI single up the middle to score Davis.
Guilford answered with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth and tacked on another run in the seventh.
BSC attempted another rally in the top of the eighth as Davis hit a RBI single through the left side with only one out to bring the score to 9-4. Davis stole second base but a strikeout and a groundout quelled the Big Blues’ scoring opportunity.
The Quakers put the game away for good in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs.
Davis finished the game with a game-high three hits and Williams went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Alex Quick came away with the loss for BSC.
The Big Blues will return to action next Saturday when they take on Montreat College (N.C.) in a doubleheader in Greer, S.C.
