Cavaliers outrun Wolfpack

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Down by 13 points in the first half, the Virginia Cavaliers outscored North Carolina State 27-8 in the final 10 minutes on Sunday to defeat the Wolfpack 78-59 at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers scored the last 11 points of the first half but still trailed 32-30 at the break. Virginia (11-5, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) took its first lead on a three-pointer by senior China Crosby, 1:21 into the second half.

During a seven-minute stretch spanning halftime, North Carolina State (8-9, 0-5 ACC) was held scoreless. The Wolfpack mounted a 12-2 run that tied the score 51-51 midway through the half.

Virginia’s Ataira Franklin responded with a fast-break layup to start a 12-0 spurt, giving the Cavaliers control the rest of the way.

“This was a great game,” Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle said on the school’s athletics website. “Every game in the ACC is tough and we were really prepping hard for N.C. State. They were 0-4 coming in, but all their games were tough. I told our team early not to take them lightly and that the Wolfpack were a dangerous team. I think they proved that in the first half.”

N.C. State head coach Shellie Harper said, “Virginia does a really good job of not beating themselves. They are very consistent and they are going to win a lot of ball games being that way.”

Four Virginia starters scored in double figures.

Making six of her nine field-goal tries, Kelsey Wolfe ended the game with 24 points and six assists for Virginia. Telia McCall had her third straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Franklin scored 15 points with five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Kody Burke led the Wolfpack with 19 points, eight rebounds and State’s only two blocks. Marissa Kastanek added 17 points.

North Carolina State was 5 for 10 from the foul line; Virginia was 19 of 27.
