Falcons spoil BSC softball home opener

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The Bluefield State softball team was routed by Fairmont State 10-0 (5 innings), 18-2 (6 innings) in their home opener Saturday afternoon at Graham Rec Park.

The Fighting Falcons improve to 13-6 (3-1 WVIAC) with the doubleheader sweep while the Lady Blues fall to 1-20 (0-6 WVIAC).

Holly Frampton led Fairmont State in the first game, belting two home runs including a grand slam to conclude the shortened game with six RBI’s. Amanda Skidmore also hit a home run as she went 2-for-3 at the dish with three RBI’s.

Starting pitcher Chelsea Cobb held Bluefield State to only three hits while fanning six batters in five innings on the mound to earn the win.

Kristen Hutchinson earned the loss.

In game two, the Lady Blues were first to score as Reva Davis scored on a RBI groundout from Ally Hatfield. Bluefield State held the one-run lead until the top of the third when a RBI SAC fly from Sarah Parsons knotted the game at one.

The Fighting Falcons  put the game out of reach in the fifth with a three-run inning highlighted by another home run from Frampton, her third of the day.

The game got out of hand with an 11-run sixth inning and the Lady Blues were able to close the game with their second run as Brittany Cook hit a RBI single but was thrown out at second in attempt to stretch the single into a double.

Alesha Jones earned the game two win after allowing only two runs, four hits and striking two in six innings.

Mandy Cokeley was tagged with the game-two loss.

For the doubleheader, Frampton led Fairmont State, going 5-for-6 with nine RBI’s and four runs scored while Cook led Bluefield State at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a RBI in the doubleheader.

The Lady Blues return to action today at noon with a doubleheader against Alderson-Broaddus.

First pitch is scheduled for a 12 noon start at Graham Rec Park.
