College briefs: BSC's Kruk earns top honors

BLUEFIELD — •Bluefield State men’s tennis player  Pitor Kruk has been named the WVIAC Player of the Week. A  junior from Zarow, Poland, Kruk went undefeated in singles and doubles play, helping the Big Blues to the regular-season championship. Playing at the No. 2 singles spot, he earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against West Virginia State and helped his doubles partner at the No. 1 position to an 8-0 win. Against Charleston, he garnered  6-3, 6-3 win in singles play and a 9-7 doubles victory. He also tallied a 6-1, 6-3 singles win against Concord and teamed up with Jacob Carey for a win in the doubles match.

• Tazewell product Ryan Hankins hit two home runs in Virginia Intermont’s 12-3 win over Emory & Henry on Tuesday night. Hankins, a freshman from Tazewell, hit long balls in the third and fifth innings, and also drove in four runs. Gavan Yates, also of Tazewell, is also on the roster for the 21-11 Cobras.

 •Virginia Tech will join Oklahoma, Seton Hall and Michigan State at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the championship rounds of the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Nov. 22-23.
