West Liberty advances to D-II title game

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Shawn Dyer scored 30 points and West Liberty sank 49.2 percent of its shots as the Hilltoppers reached the NCAA Division II championship game with an 86-83 semifinal win over South Carolina Aiken at the Ford Center on Thursday night.

West Liberty (31-3) will play Central Missouri (29-5) in the finals at 3 p.m. Saturday in Evansville.

The Hilltoppers took the lead for good at 77-76 with 4:52 remaining on a jumper by Keene Cockburn, but could not extend their advantage beyond six points.

A 3-pointer by Ronald Zimmerman cut the Pacers’ deficit to 85-83 with 25 seconds left. Dyer made one of two free throws with 14 seconds remaining. Derrick Scott’s final 3-point attempt to tie the game for USC Aiken missed as time ran out.

Devontae Wright led the Pacers with 19 points and Zimmerman scored 13.
