Barclay hired by Herd as RB coach

HUNTINGTON — Chris Barclay, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 2005 Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, has joined the Marshall football staff as running backs coach, head coach Doc Holliday announced Thursday.

Barclay, 30, comes to Huntington from William and Mary, where he served in the same capacity for the Tribe for the past two seasons. He has also spent time as an assistant at Wake Forest.

“Chris is an excellent addition to our staff,” Holliday said. “He brings strong credentials, as a player and coach, and has worked hard to get this point in his career. We are pleased to welcome Chris to our program.”

Barclay was a standout at Wake Forest, becoming the first player in ACC history to lead the league in rushing three consecutive seasons and finished his career as Wake Forest's all-time leading rusher with 4,032 yards and 40 touchdowns.

He played for, and coached under Jim Grobe, a Huntington native who served as a Marshall assistant coach from 1979-83.

Barclay later spent three seasons in the NFL with the Browns, and had one stint in NFL Europe,
