Bluefield College to offer men's volleyball

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Bluefield College Athletic Director Peter Dryer has announced the addition of men’s volleyball, with competition slated to start in the spring of 2015.

Rams head women’s volleyball coach Jim Butski will also lead the men’s program.

“We are excited to add men’s volleyball to our athletic opportunities here at Bluefield College,” Dryer said. “It is an emerging sport in small college athletics, and we have a great set up here at BC to offer a quality program.”

While Dryer feels the opportunity is readily available for the Rams’ athletic department, he also sees the excitement and support it can draw during the spring athletic season.

“It is an exciting sport and will provide an additional opportunity for our campus and community to engage Bluefield College athletics during the spring season and support our student-athletes,” Dryer said.

Butski, currently beginning his first season with the Rams’ women’s program, is also looking forward to Bluefield College offering volleyball for male student-athletes.

“Peter [Dryer] and I had first spoke about the potential for a varsity men’s volleyball program when I was first hired to coach the women’s program,” said Butski.

“We went through and researched the possibilities and felt that we could make it happen here at Bluefield College. The NAIA considers men’s volleyball as an emerging sport and there are many NCAA DII and DIII institutions here in the East which field teams.”

The NAIA recognizes men’s volleyball as a varsity sport, but does not organize an official national championship competition. However, the NAIA does conduct a year-end national invitational tournament.

Butski’s first goal, in the next 12 months, is to piece together a team that embraces Bluefield College’s mission and purpose.

“As always, finding top student-athletes who are a good fit for Bluefield College is our number one priority and the search has already begun,” Butski said.

Butski says that his major recruiting centers will include Fort Lauderdale/Miami, Or-lando, Atlanta, coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, Richmond, Chicago, Colum-bus, Cleveland, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

“I am looking forward to introducing the program and the first ever-roster to the college next fall and believe that the power and excitement of the men’s game will make this sport a fan favorite here on campus.”

Any potential men’s volleyball student-athletes are encouraged to contact Butski about the opportunity by emailing jbutski@bluefield.edu.
