The Virginia Tech Hokies will put their 5-0 record on the line this evening when they host the Iowa Hawkeyes (5-1) at Cassell Coliseum in the 2012 Dick’s Sporting Goods ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Tech has won both of the previous meetings of the two schools, both of which took place in the Challenge. The Hokies are off to the team’s best start since the 2004-05 season.
Iowa is coming off a loss to Wichita State, 75-63, on Wednesday night in Cancun.
Erick Green, who leads the ACC in scoring, tallied a career-high 27 points to lead the Hokies to an 87-76 win over Appalachian State on Friday. Jarell Eddie added 23 points and Marshall Wood scored 13 points in the win.
Will Johnston has made nine career field goals. All nine are three-pointers. He hit three of them in the win over VMI, setting a new career-high of nine points and matched that number in the win at UNC Greens-boro on Monday night.
Virginia plays at Wisconsin on Wednesday in the Challenge, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
This is the 14th year for the inter-conference competition. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges, while the Big Ten has captured the Commissioners Cup for past three events, including an 8-4 win advantage last year.
In the event of a 6-6 tie, the Commissioners Cup will remain with the conference that won the previous year.
The 2012 Challenge involves nine teams ranked in an ESPN.com early preseason top 25, including five of the top nine: No. 1 Indiana, No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 NC State, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 9 Michigan State.
Eleven teams between the two conferences played in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
