Concord bops 20 hits, bounces Bobcats

ATHENS — Ryan Johnston drove in four runs and Devin Smith celebrated senior day by contributing from the mound and the batter’s box as Concord University beat West Virginia Wesleyan 12-5 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Bobcats.

Concord (28-16, 23-7 WVIAC) collected 20 hits and finished a 5-0 week. The Mountain Lions trail West Virginia State by just 0.75 power rating points for first place in the WVIAC South.

Johnston was 3-for-4, including his sixth home run of the season, to raise his batting average to .390. Andrew Seigel went 4-for-6 and stole his 22nd base of the year. Josh Wenger was 3 for 4 and Jerrod Groves batted 2 for 4.

Smith was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. After giving up a Bobcat run in the first inning, Smith (2-3) settled down to allow only one hit and no runs over the next five innings.

Meanwhile Concord pounded 16 hits and took a 10-1 lead into the seventh. Wesleyan (16-22, 11-12) would get to Smith for five runs in the seventh, but Justin Willard came on in relief to strike out Nick Jones, getting CU out of the jam with a 10-5 lead.

Chris Baker and Tim Leather pitched shutout innings in the eighth and ninth. Concord added two additional insurance runs when Seigel scored on a passed ball in the seventh and Holt Cassada drove in Wenger with a single in the eighth.

Prior to the game, Concord’s senior class — Smith, Wenger, Willard, Jacob Mays and Drew Spear — was recognized.
