Concord's Carey honored

ATHENS — Concord cornerback Mike Carey has been named a Beyond Sports Network Athlete of the Week and the Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his play in Concord’s 34-17 victory over Fairmont State last week, the organizations announced Monday.

Carey recorded career-highs of two interceptions, six tackles and two pass break-ups.

For the season, the junior has compiled 18 tackles, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and five passes defensed.

Carey joins teammates Riyahd Richardson and Jake Lilly as well as former CU standout Joe Greenway as the only Mountain Lion players to record a two-interception game since 2011.

Carey is the second Mountain Lion defender to earn MEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Senior safety Josh Clark was awarded the honor in week four.

The Concord defense continues to be one of the best in the nation. Through five games, the Mountain Lions rank second in NCAA Division II in total defense (228.2 yards allowed per game), first in passing yards allowed (103.2 per game) and fourth in points allowed per game (9.8).
