Loveless leads Cumberland past Rams

LEBANON, Tenn. — Broc Loveless ran for 127 yards and scored three touchdowns in the second half to lead Cumberland, Tenn., to a 40-10 Mid-South Conference victory over Bluefield College on Saturday afternoon in front of 2,228 spectators at Nokes-Lasater Field.

Bluefield (0-4) trailed 16-3 at halftime, and pulled within 19-10 late in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs scored the next 21 points to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Marion Harris did lead the Bluefield rushing attack, which has been non-existent for much of the season, with 121 yards on 15 carries.

Ashten Dixon earned his first collegiate start for Bluefield, completing 16 of 29 passes for 132 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Rodrell Smith five receptions for 16 yards, while Richard Johnson had four catches for 22 yards and a score. Bland County’s Dylan Kidd caught three passes for 41 yards.

Reed Gurchiek completed 19 of 32 passes for 164 yards for Cumberland, with Frank Brooks picking off one of those attempts for the Rams.

Michael Nwokoji put Cumberland on the board during a 10-play, 49-yard drive to open the game, scoring from 15 yards out just 3:24 into the game.

The Bulldogs followed with a safety, and pushed the lead to 16-0 with a 1-yard run by Gurchiek at the 10:57 mark of the second quarter.

Both teams traded field goals — a 28-yarder by Caleb Frye for Bluefield and a 20-yard kick from Cumberland’s Beau Baker — with the Bulldogs up 19-3 with 6:57 left in the third quarter.

Bluefield, which was able to retrieve all five of its fumbles, was able to narrow the gap to 19-10 with 2:45 on the clock in the third period on a 4-yard pass from Dixon to Johnson, with Frye adding the extra point conversion kick.

That is when Loveless took over, scoring on runs of 46, 13 and 23 yards over the final 17 minutes to put the game away for the Bulldogs.

Loveless gained those 127 yards on just six carries. Gurchiek gained 53 yards on the ground. Blake DeBoard caught six passes for 52 yards.

Cumberland (2-2, 1-0) out-gained the Rams 402-271.

Brooks and Ernest Moore led Bluefield with 10 tackles apiece. Harry Hollins added seven stops and broke up three pass attempts.

Nathan Jernigan led Cumberland with 10 tackles. The Bulldogs recorded 14 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.

Bluefield (0-4, 0-2) will visit Bethel in McKenzie, Tenn. on Saturday. Bethel (0-5) is also winless on the season.
