Concord opens home season with win over UPJ

ATHENS — Senior pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz gave up just three runs over eight innings and freshman outfielder Eli Flynn drove in two runs on three hits as the Concord University baseball team earned an 8-3 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The victory evens the Mountain Lions' record on the season at 2-2 overall. Pitt-Johnstown drops to 0-4 with the loss.

Weatherholtz (1-0) picked up his first win by striking out four UPJ batters while surrendering no walks and scattering 12 hits on 125 pitches in eight innings of work. The Manassas, Va. native allowed just one hit over his final three innings pitched. Senior relief pitcher Tim Leather made his second appearance of the year, tossing a perfect ninth inning.

Making his first collegiate start, Flynn went 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored, a stolen base and a triple.

Concord will look to complete the three-game sweep of Pitt-Johnstown with a pair of wins Sunday when the teams meet for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
