Concord falls to Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The nationally-ranked Mount Olive Trojans broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in one inning Monday and went on to defeat Concord University 8-4, taking two of the Mountain Lions’ first three games of the year.

Concord (1-2) scored three runs in the top of the first. Andrew Seigel led off with a bunt single and Jerrod Groves smacked a double. They scored on a pair of sacrifice flies. T.J. Brockway’s single brought Ryan Johnston to the plate.

Mount Olive (6-3) tied it in the bottom of the first courtesy of three two-out singles by Rob Shipman, Willi Martin and Justin Manning, and it stayed that way until the fifth stanza when things fell apart for Concord on the mound.

Chris Kelly, the Mountain Lions’ starting pitcher, allowed two singles and hit a batter to load the bases. Zach Kelly came on in relief, but allowed a walk and also hit a batter before reliever Dustin Nuckels took over for CU.

Two more Trojans scored on a wild play in which a batted ball came off the glove of first baseman Joey Miller, who was not charged with an error.

Groves singled to lead off the eighth inning and scored again on a Mount Olive error. The Trojans, who had a dozen hits, scored their final run later in that inning.

Gunner Kines (2-1) started for Mount Olive and pitched seven innings, holding Concord to three runs and four hits to get the win.

Nuckels (0-1) was tagged with the loss, though he gave up just two hits and one run over 3 2/3 innings of work.

Groves was 2 for 3 with a double to bring his hit production in three games to 6 for 10. Brockway was 2 for 4.

Manning drove in three runs for Mount Olive, ranked fourth in NCAA Division II.

Concord is scheduled to play its home opener Saturday, hosting Pitt-Johnstown at Anderson Field in a noon doubleheader.
