Hokies greet Miami today at Cassell

BLUEFIELD — The Miami Hurricanes can expect a chilly welcome today at Cassell Coliseum, after traveling from warm South Florida to the snow-covered hills of Southwest Virginia for today’s tilt with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

The high temperature at Coral Gables, Fla., today is projected to be 75 degrees.

The Hokies (8-15, 1-10 ACC), mired in the cellar of the conference standings, begin a three-game homestand this evening that will include a rematch with arch rival Virginia on Tuesday night.

Jarell Eddie has been steady for the Hokies, scoring 14 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing. He has also contributed 34 assists, 10 blocks and nine steals this season.

Freshman Ben Emelogu gives the Hokies 11.1 points per game on average. Fellow freshman Devin Wilson leads Virginia Tech with 21 steals, but has also turned the ball over 67 times.

The Hurricanes (12-12, 3-8) are the defending ACC champions but have found little success in the league this season. Miami beat Florida State 77-73 on Monday to snap a two-game losing streak. Miami has held 15 of its last 17 opponents to fewer than 70 points.

Rion Brown leads Miami in scoring with 14.5 points per game, including a 34 percent success rate from beyond the 3-point arc. He is also leads the teams in rebounds with six per contest. Donnavan Kirk provides 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on average.

Virginia Tech took Pittsburgh to double overtime last Saturday afternoon before falling to the Panthers 62-57. Eddie led the Hokies in Pittsburgh with 15 points, and Cadarian Raines had 11 rebounds.

In their first conference game of the season, the Hokies nipped the Hurricanes 61-60 in overtime on Dec. 8 in Coral Gables, Fla., paced by Eddie’s 24 points and eight rebounds. He scored Tech’s final 11 points in regulation, tying the game 56-56.

At Cassell Coliseum, the two teams have each won five games in the overall series.

Trevor Thompson, a 6-foot-11 freshman, is scheduled to get his third start of the season for Virginia Tech. Wilson is averaging 33.8 minutes per outing, highest on the team.

The Hokies list Adam Smith as out with a left calf strain. C.J. Barksdale, hampered by a groin strain, is listed as questionable.
