Late 3 again takes game from Thundering Herd

NEW ORLEANS — Jay Hook, who finished with 11 points, drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to help Tulane hold off Marshall 68-65 on Sunday at Devlin Fieldhouse.

It was the second time in three days that Marshall was defeated by a late 3-point basket.

The Green Wave (13-11, 5-4 Conference USA) shot 45.8 percent from the field and went 8 of 16 beyond the arc. Jonathan Stark had 17 points with six assists, while Louis Dabney and Payton Henson each chipped in 14 points.

Marshall (8-17, 2-8) was paced by Chris Thomas with 21 points. Kareem Canty had 16 points and Cheikh Sane added 11.

An early 14-2 run by Tulane created a 19-6 lead. Marshall rallied, with DeVince Boykins knocking down a 3-pointer with one second left in the half to cut the Herd’s deficit to 33-29.

The Green Wave used another 14-2 run to take a 51-36 lead, though Marshall scored nine straight points at the midpoint of the second half. Sane sank a layup on a putback to tie it at 63-63 with 1:16 left.

After a Stark layup, Thomas hit two free throws to tie the game 65-65. Tulane ran the clock down to set up Hook’s game-winner from the top of the key, and Marshall couldn’t get a shot off on the ensuing possession.

As a team, the Herd shot 44.4 percent from the field (20-of-45) to 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from Tulane.

Tulane has won three straight against Marshall, evening the all-time series between the schools at eight wins apiece.

The Thundering Herd will have six days without an opponent before taking on C-USA newcomer Charlotte on the road on Saturday at 7 p.m.
