WVU, MU women win on the basketball court

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Career-high point totals from forwards Chukwuka Ezeigbo and Veronica Ruiz helped Marshall earn a 70-66 win against Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon in the SIU Arena.

Marshall improved to 5-4 for the season and recorded its first road victory of the year. The Salukis dropped to 1-7 with the loss.

Ezeigbo and Ruiz each finished the contest with 17 points, marking a career-high for both players. Ezeigbo went 5-for-12 in the field and was 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Ruiz went 6-of-11 from the field and was 5-of-6 from the free throw stripe.

On the boards, Marshall recorded 44 rebounds, compared to SIU’s 30. The Herd has yet to lose a game this season when controlling the rebounding margin. Twenty of the rebounds came off the offensive board and the Marshall combined for 21 second chance points.

Marshall will return home for the next three games, beginning with a 2 p.m. contest against Ohio on Saturday, Dec. 15.


WVU women rout Bonnies

MORGANTOWN — Ayanna Dunning and Christal Caldwell each scored 17 points to pace West Virginia to a 67-47 homecourt win against St. Bonaventure on Saturday.

Caldwell led the Mountaineers (6-2) with eight rebounds and Dunning had six rebounds and missed only one of her field-goal tries from the Coliseum floor.

St. Bonaventure (5-6) was just 5 for 22 from the floor in the first half as West Virginia took a 28-13 halftime lead. The Mountaineers were not threatened in the second half and ended the game with a 50.9 percent field-goal accuracy.

Alaina Walker led the Bonnies with 17 points.

Katie Healy had eight rebounds, but WVU held an overall 35 to 27 rebounding advantage.
