BSC, BC women hoops teams lose road contests

INSTITUTE — The Bluefield State Lady Blues braved snowy weather to take on West Virginia State on Saturday evening in the Kanawha Valley, and led the Yellow Jackets 35-34 at halftime, but lost traction in the second half and fell 81-65 to absorb their fifth straight loss.

Shae Mebane had 14 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and an assist for Bluefield State (10-9, 8-8 West Virginia Conference). Charlene Diggs contributed 11 points.

Kashauna Cook tossed in 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for West Virginia State (8-11, 8-8).

The Lady Blues connected on 21 of 72 field attempts, while their hosts made half their shots (25 of 50). Bluefield State sank 18 of 24 foul shots but West Virginia State had 38 free throws, making 28. The Yellow Jackets won the rebounding battle 43 to 41.

Bluefield State plays at home on Saturday, Feb. 9, taking on West Virginia Wesleyan. The game will include recogniton of Play 4 Kay Week, emphasizing the fight against cancer in memory of late basketball coach Kay Yow.

UVa-Wise 68, Bluefield College 60

WISE, Va. — The Lady Rams lost their second straight game Saturday. Bluefield (14-10, 6-8 Mid-South Conference), which took a 64-47 win over UVa-Wise on Jan. 3 in Bluefield, could not sweep the series.

The Highland Cavaliers (7-15, 4-9) scored almost 10 points higher than their 58.4 points per game average coming into the contest.

Bluefield was led by Teqa McNeal with 19 points and Janee Simmons who had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Chelsea Cluesman recorded a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds for UVa-Wise. Kenzie Poindexter scored 14 points, making four of five three-point shots.
