Concord men surge past Glenville State

GSC women dominate CU

ATHENS — The Concord Mountain Lions sank 52.5 percent of their field-goal tries and  three players scored in double digits to snap a two-game losing streak with a 73-61 victory over Glenville State College Monday night at the Carter Center.

Concord (10-6, 6-6 WVIAC) broke out of a 10-10 tie with a 12-1 run, then finished the half with a 6-1 run for a 32-21 advantage. The home team scored the first nine points of the second half and the scoring gap never got below 11 points after that.

The Mountain Lions, who led by as many as 20 points, held statistical edges over the Pioneers in rebounds (37-30), assists (19-8), points in the paint (40-20), points off turnovers (14-10), second chance points (12-7) and bench scoring (41-12).

The Pioneers (9-8, 6-7) made 19 of 52 field-goal attempts.

Concord sophomore Thomas Brown produced team-highs of 13 points and three steals to go with four assists. Nick Moyer, in his first start, had eight rebounds.

Jamel Morris had 16 points for Glenville State and Lamar Mallory cleared nine boards.


Women’s game: Glenville State 104, Concord 67

The league-leading Pioneers (17-2, 12-1) scored a school record 70 points in the first half on Monday in Athens. The visitors scored 19 unanswered points and forced 18 Conocrd turnovers en route to a 70-26 halftime lead.

Amanda Smith led Concord with 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists. She has scored in double figures for four straight games.

Ashleigh Fossett had a game-high 25 points for Glenville State, known for its mass substitution of players throughout the game.

The Pioneers turned 28 Concord turnovers into 36 points. The Lady Lions had a season high 46 rebounds, five more total boards than GSC.

Concord (5-13, 4-8) lost for the fourth time in five games.
