Concord athletes enjoy weekend on the track

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Concord University indoor men's track and field team standout R.J. Anderson delivered a pair of top-15 performances at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Anderson placed fifth in the 200-meter dash and 11th in the 60-meter dash. He ran a time of 21.93 seconds in the 200-meters while also posting a mark of 6.97 seconds in the 60-meters despite being settled with a faulty starting block.

Anderson, who currently owns the 10th best time in the 200-meters (21.80 seconds) and the 15th-fastest mark in the 60-meters (6.85 seconds) in all of NCAA Division II, has already met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in both races after dominating performances at last weekend's Doug Raymond Invitational.

Shawnee Carnett and Lydia Powell  represented the women's indoor track and field also competed on Saturday. Carnett broke school records in the 400-meters at the Virginia Tech Invitational and Powell set a new personal best time in the 500-meters at the Marietta Open.

Carnett started her weekend on Friday by clocking a time of 2:55.15 in the 1,000-meters to finish in ninth place and break her own school record, which she previously set in 2010 (3:00.76).

She ran the 400-meters on Saturday, completing the race in 57.87 seconds.

The time was good enough to place 11th and just missed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 57.70 seconds. However, the mark was more than enough to break her previous school record of 58.45 seconds set  in 2010 in the event.

Powell recorded a pair of top-three finishes in the 500-meters and the 200-meters at Marietta. She placed second in the 500 with a personal best time of 1:22.72 and third in the 200 at 28.42 seconds.

Concord returns to the track and field on Jan. 25-26 at the Liberty Open.
