BLUEFIELD — Concord University has chosen Amanda Malkiewicz as the school’s fourth women’s soccer coach. Malkiewicz, who served as an assistant the last two seasons under former Stefani Workman, helped the Mountain Lions to a 16-16-4 record and a spot in the WVIAC semifinals in 2012. Malkiewicz, who played at East Carolina from 2008-11, takes over a club that was 6-9-2 last season. Workman left Athens to take a position at the University of Georgia, which, ironically, is also located in Athens.
The Chicago Bears drafted Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller with 14th pick Thursday, the latest move to boost a defense that ranked among the league’s worst last season. The 6-foot, 190-pound Fuller missed time last season because of a sports hernia but was productive when he played. He broke up 10 passes and made two interceptions.
Coleman Thomas, a product of Fort Chiswell, near Wytheville, has been
has been tabbed to start at offensive tackle for the Tennessee Volunteers in the fall by head coach Butch Jones. According to media reports, Jones made the announcement during a Big Orange Caravan stop in Atlanta earlier this week. The 6-foot-6, 311-pound Thomas enrolled early at Tennessee, and
reportedly earned the spot with his performance in spring practice. Thomas’ father, Richie, also played collegiately at Emory & Henry.
