Clutch Hitting Leads WVU Over Marshall

MORGANTOWN — Cam O'Brien finished a home run away from the cycle and scored three runs as the West Virginia baseball team defeated Marshall 10-3 on Wednesday evening at Hawley Field.

The Mountaineers improved to 21-16 on the season, while the Thundering Herd fell to 18-21.

With 12 hits, WVU has now recorded at least 10 hits in three-consecutive games and has scored 24 runs on 28 hits in its last two games.

O'Brien would get three hits on the night, a single, a double and a triple. Ryan McBroom finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Brad Johnson and Michael Constantini each had two RBIs.

Senior Corey Walter (1-4) was impressive getting the win in his second start of the season. Walter scattered seven hits over seven innings, allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks. Michael Bennett and Ryan Hostrander worked one inning each to finish the game.

Marshall right-hander Lance Elder (0-1) got the loss, going just two innings with four earned runs off of four hits, two strikeouts and two walks. Seven pitchers combined to finish the game for the Thundering Herd.

West Virginia will round out its five-game home stand this weekend with a Big 12 Conference series against Kansas State.

Marshall will visit Alabama-Birmingham this weekend, and will face West Virginia again on Wednesday in Power Park in Charleston.
