BC kicks off NCCAA regional soccer play

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The 2012 National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Regional Women's Soccer Tournament begins on Saturday at various sites across the region. Bluefield College opens play at East River Soccer Complex on Saturday evening when they host Union (Tenn.) at 6 p.m.

The fourth seeded Rams (9-9-1) host the fifth seeded Lady Bulldogs (7-9-2) with the winner advancing to the NCCAA Mid-East Regional Semifinals to face the top seeded Tigers of Campbellsville. The semifinals and finals of the Mid-East Regional will be held November 16-17 at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Ky.

The Rams who finished a program best sixth in the Mid-South Conference are playing in their first NCCAA Mid-East Regional Tournament have already set a program record for wins, conference wins, shutouts, goals, assists and individual records in goals, assists, shutouts while finishing sixth in the MSC.

Bluefield enters the match on a two game winless streak drawing 0-0 with Southern Virginia in their regular season final before dropping a 4-0 decision to Campbellsville in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals last week. The Rams however ended the regular season on a four game unbeaten streak that included three wins and three shutouts as they outscored their opponents 9-1.

The Rams are led by a quartet of attackers including a pair of MSC honorees. Radford, Va., native Pip Pattison was named to the Mid-South Conference First Team after scoring a team best 15 goals to go along with three assists. Woodbrige, Va., native Enajah Winbush was named to the Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention Team after scoring a BC true freshman best seven goals to go along with a pair of assists. Beachwood, Ohio, native Callan Camin has provided 10 assists in her first year with the Rams while scoring a goal and Highland, N.Y., native Jessica Dutka has provided six goals and two assists in her first season with Bluefield. Dutka, Pattison, and Winbush have each scored three game winning goals for BC.

Wren, Ohio, native Kayla Richardson has played 1746 of the Rams 1822 minutes in goal this season keeping five shutouts and a 1.90 goals against average while making 112 saves in her first season. Richardson has been helped by a stellar back line that features Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention Missy Baines along with Las Vagas, Nev., natives Ashley Moreno and Nicole Bradley and freshman Dakota Duckworth from Newport News, Va.

Union who finished 7-9-2 with losses to NCAA Division II No. 7 University of West Florida, 2-0, No. 15 University of North Alabama, 3-1, and Mid-South Conference Tournament Champions, NAIA No. 25 Cumberland, 1-0 in overtime enters the match on a two game losing streak losing a pair of 1-0 shutouts to Alabama-Huntsville and Cumberland (Tenn.). The Lady Bulldogs have lost four of their last six regular season matches and haven't played since losing that 1-0 double overtime game to Cumberland on October 29 at home.

The Lady Bulldogs are led on offense by Caracas, Venezuela, native Dionna Linn, Germantown, Tenn., natives Stefanie King and Whitney Kramer.

Linn a 5-foot-3 junior has a team best seven goals to go along with three assists while King a 5-foot-6 senior has added four goals and three assists. Kramer a 5-foot-6 senior also has four goals and a goal. Sophomore Alex Taylor stands 5-foot-8 from Franklin, Tenn., has added just two goals but she is tied with Linn and King with a pair of game winning goals this season.

5-foot-5 freshman Emily Waggoner has played all 1686 minutes between the pipes for UU making 85 saves while allowing just 27 goals as she has kept a 1.44 goals against average. The Mayfield, Ky., native has kept four shutouts this season while earning seven victories.
