BLUEFIELD, Va. —
The Battle of the Bluefields moves inside to the Dome Gymnasium as the Bluefield College Rams men and women’s basketball teams host their cross-town rival, the Bluefield State College Big Blues and Lady Blues, tonight.
Different this year is the fact that the games will be exhibitions for Bluefield State, a member of the NCAA and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but will be counted as regular games for Bluefield College, a member of the NAIA and Mid-South Conference.
The women’s game tips at 6 p.m.
Bluefield State returns its leading scorers from last year, Charlene Diggs and Dragana Tomic, along with top rebounder Shea Mebane. Coach J.J. Oliver’s team only lost two seniors from last year’s squad.
The Lady Blues’ exhibition against WVU Tech scheduled for last Wednesday was postponed due to weather conditions.
Bluefield College coach M.J. Baker’s team enters the contest with a 2-0 mark, having defeated Virginia Intermont 82-59 and Allen 84-48 in the Wendy’s Classic this past weekend on the BC campus.
Teqa McNeal enters the game as the Lady Rams leading scorer averaging 18 per game, including 23 against Virginia Intermont. McNeal also has six steals on the season. Asia Watson has cleared the glass 10 times in BC’s first two games.
The men’s contest will tip at 8 p.m. The Ramblin’ Rams, led by head coach Richard Morgan, lost an exhibition at Marshall 94-67 last Wednesday, and fell 80-74 to Virginia University of Lynchburg, Saturday at the Dome.
Against VUofL, Kearsten Marion fired in 25 and Byron Carpenter added 24 along with 13 rebounds.
Bluefield State fell in an exhibition at North Carolina Greensboro 102-74, also on Saturday. Look for Johnny Uhegwu, Vincent Rogers and Malik Edwards to set the pace for the Big Blues and coach Jamaal Jackson.
