Concord eclipsed in bottom of ninth

INSTITUTE — Concord took an eight-run lead against West Virginia State into the eighth inning on Saturday, but the Yellow Jackets rallied to score 11 runs in the final two, and took a 16-14 conference win at Cal Bailey Field.

Jordan Simpson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to win it for West Virginia State (8-11, 6-3).

Jacob Mays went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a home run, three RBIs and three walks for Concord (12-13, 7-5). Brandon Costa and Bret Blevins also had three hits for CU.

Kevin Mack made his first pitching start of the season and gave the Mountain Lions seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. He exited the game in the eighth with Concord leading by eight runs.

But Mack received a no decision after the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs off of three hits and two errors in the eighth before adding four more in the ninth. Will Zuspan (0-1) took his first loss of the year.
