Concord wins four times on diamond

ATHENS — The Concord University baseball team snapped its five-game losing streak with a dominating doubleheader sweep of Wheeling Jesuit, 12-7, 11-0, Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The victories improve Concord's record to 7-10 on the year and 2-2 in the WVIAC.

Concord's offense put together a pair of its top offensive games of the year. In two games Concord out hit Wheeling Jesuit 27-17, at least seven players had a hit in each game and the Mountain Lions combined to steal 13 bases.

Bluefield High School product Andrew Seigel was 5-for-9 with four runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases. Bret Blevins and sDevin Smith both tallied four hits with Smith driving in three runs and Blevins swiping four bases.

Chris Baker earned the win in the opener in relief of Tyler Zimm. Smith, Will Zuspan and Grundy product Cody Justus combined for the three-hit shutout in the finale.

Concord will host Glenville State on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.



Lady Lions win twice

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Lady Lions secured two more wins at the National Collegiate Softball Invitational, defeating Eureka College, 2-1, and Principia College, 9-0.

The wins increased the Mountain Lions' winning streak to four games and boosted their overall record to 10-10 on the season.

Rachael Mack recorded a pair of two-hit games and had a strong pitching performance against Eureka while Lacey McDougall drove in two runs on four hits.

Stephanie Harper and Brantlea Wood combined for their second shutout in as many days, the fourth shutout of the year for the Lions.

McDougall extended her hitting streak to a team season-high nine games.

Concord will play its final game at NCSI this morning against Spalding University.
